How to Help a Grieving Friend
Reach Out with Compassion: When your friend is experiencing the death of someone they care about, it’s important to connect with them in some way. Make a point to spend time with them and share cherished memories.
Presence: Having an opportunity to tell his or her story may be really beneficial to help your friend heal. If they open up about their experience, it’s important to genuinely listen to what they’re sharing with you.
Just Ask: Sometimes you just don’t know what to do. When in doubt, just ask.
It’s not just “one and done”: Some of your friends will grieve for the rest of their life. It is important to remember that each person has his or her own way of grieving and that grief can be triggered when you least expect it.
Bring Your Friends Together: Although invitations might be turned down, continue to invite your friends to social gatherings. You can be an advocate to ensure that your grieving friend isn't grieving alone.
