There's no question about it
...hospices need our help.
"Residential hospices are built through philanthropic giving and fundraising. While the government partially funds the clinical operation of hospices, it is estimated that more than 50 per cent of the overall operating expenses must be raised year after year to make up for shortfalls. Hospices also rely heavily on volunteers, who are the lifeblood of hospices. From direct patient care to housekeeping, from meal preparation to night vigils, hospices simply do not function without their armies of care..."
-Dr. Darren Cargill, Healthy Debate, 2020
Initiatives to support Hospice Palliative Care can take on many forms. Here are some examples of our successful campaigns that raised awareness, funds and needed equipment to support compassionate community hospice care.
In this heartwarming initiative, we brought culinary companionship to a local palliative care unit through the innovative "Lunch and Munch" program. Volunteers empowered hospice patients to become chefs-for-a-day, collaborating on personalized menus that satisfied both appetite and nostalgia. Working side-by-side, youth and patients transformed cherished recipes into a nourishing meal, fostering connections across generations. The program culminated in joyful communal dining experience, where stories were shared, laughter echoed, and dignity was served alongside each carefully prepared dish.

We were able to participate in the Kensington Hospice Hike to raise funds to support their hospice expansion.
Sometimes people come to hospice in need of hearing aids, but they just don't access to them. Imagine not being able to hear at the end-of-life? We raised funds to purchase pocket talkers for a local palliative care unit.
Taking care of plants cultivates mindfullness and a sense of purpose. We were able to raise funds and donate small plants to form an indoor plant garden at a community hospice, where residents participate in a once-weekly indoor gardening care program.
Volunteers donated time and skill to create beautiful hand-stiched afgans that are given to hospice residents to keep them warm and to show them we care. Last year, our small group of volunteers were able to make 10 afgans and they were given to our community Palliative Care Unit.
We've partnered with Kits for a Cause to provide winter care packages to Journey Home Hospice, an organization dedicated to supporting people living with serious illness who are experiencing homelessness and structural vulnerability at end-of-life. These kits represent our community's compassion, offering a gentle embrace to those often overlooked in their time of greatest need. We hope this small gesture brings warmth, comfort, and a reminder that every life is valued, regardless of circumstances.
